Health and Behavior Assessments are required by most surgery centers and insurance plans prior to having weight loss surgery. Also known as a psychological assessment, this process involves meeting face to face with a behavioral health professional and doing some psychological testing. This process also has an educational component. While going through the assessment process you will begin to learn what lifestyle changes need to start happening prior to surgery and what to expect after surgery.
It is frequently helpful to have a spouse, parent, adult child or other support person join you for part of this process. The assessment process is generally done over the course of 3 or 4 sessions. Sometimes it moves more quickly, other times the process may involve additional intervention. The goal of the Health and Behavior Assessment is to help prepare a potential surgery candidate for success!
